Hi everyone,

I keep seeing the term "ASL" in text messages and social media chats and I'm confused about its meaning. From what I understand, ASL usually means "age, sex, location," used in early chat rooms to introduce yourself. However, it can also mean "American Sign Language" depending on context.

Can someone explain when each meaning is used and if it is still common in texting? Any examples would be really helpful. It is mostly used in casual online conversations but its meaning can change depending on platform and audience so context matters a lot in understanding slang terms.

In older internet chat rooms and some casual messaging, ASL stands for “age, sex, location”, where users asked others to introduce themselves briefly (e.g., “ASL?” meaning “What’s your age, sex, and location?”). This usage is now less common and can feel outdated or even intrusive. More commonly today, ASL refers to “American Sign Language”, the visual language used by the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

“ASL meaning text” usually depends on the context in which it is used in online conversations. In modern usage, ASL most commonly refers to American Sign Language, which is the visual language used by Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. However, in older internet chat rooms, the phrase ASL meaning text was often used as slang for “age, sex, location,” where users quickly asked for personal introduction details. Today, that slang version is rarely used, but it may still appear in informal or outdated chats.
