Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a portable generator and want to make sure it runs smoothly when needed. I know regular tune-ups are important, but I’m not exactly sure what all is involved.

What’s the best schedule for checking oil, air filters, spark plugs, and fuel? Are there any common mistakes to avoid during a DIY tune-up? Also, do you recommend any particular products or tools to keep it in top shape?

Any advice for both seasonal maintenance and pre-emergency prep would be really helpful.

Appreciate your tips and personal experiences!

Hi! To keep your portable generator running smoothly, start by checking the oil before each use and changing it every 50–60 hours or at least once a year using the type recommended in your manual. The air filter should be inspected monthly and cleaned or replaced if dirty, as a clogged filter can reduce efficiency and strain the engine. A proper portable generator tune-up also includes checking spark plugs every 100 hours or yearly, cleaning or replacing them as needed with the correct gap. Always use fresh fuel, and consider a stabilizer for storage to prevent clogs. Avoid skipping oil changes, ignoring the air filter, letting fuel sit too long, or leaving the generator unused for long periods. Running it for 15–20 minutes monthly and storing it in a dry, ventilated area helps keep it reliable for emergencies.
