I write stuff that doesn't fit neatly into any genre – kind of surreal, a bit raw, some hybrid forms. Most places I submit to either don't get it or say it's "not a good fit." I heard about a journal called Surging Tide that's BIPOC-led and experimental. Has anyone submitted to them? Do they actually publish challenging work?

I submitted to Surging Tide last year and honestly, it was one of the best experiences I've had with a literary journal. They're specifically looking for genre-defying, unapologetic, and unforgettable work – exactly the kind of stuff that gets rejected elsewhere. They're a BIPOC-led nonprofit and they've been around since 2020, founded by poet Emma Miao. What I really appreciated is that they feature writers who have also been in The Atlantic, Electric Literature, and even The New Yorker. They nominate for Best of the Net, Best New Poets, and the Pushcart Prize, so they're legit. If you want a home for work that doesn't fit the usual mould, I'd say check out https://surgingtidemag.com/ they welcome the celestial and ethereal, the striking and luminous. I've been following them since and the quality is consistently high.

That sounds exactly like what I've been looking for. I'm tired of getting form rejections from places that don't get what I'm trying to do. I'll read through their past issues and probably submit something soon. Thanks for the encouragement.
