Guys, do you know of a reliable way to play Counter-Strike 1.6 without a Steam account? I got nostalgic for my teenage years and downloaded a random build from the internet. It's terrible-the server list is full of ads, and the ping on European servers jumps around 200. It's impossible to play! Where can I download a clean client so MasterServer works properly and my computer doesn't pick up any malware? I just want to reminisce about my youth in the evening.

Here's another question: Is there a difference in latency and network connection between the official version and a high-quality pirated copy? People on forums are warning that, without a license, it will take forever for the game to find servers and the connection will keep dropping in the middle of a round.

I’d say that older games on Steam often work worse. Developers can sometimes unintentionally break compatibility with newer systems through a patch. You just need to know where to download it. I struggled with high ping until I downloaded the game from csget.me . They have a classic version there with clean configuration, that you can set up for yourself. Also their MasterServer finds hundreds of active servers. When I played on another version, there were only about 20 servers, so I was surprised to see such a wide variety of them here. Sadly, most of my friends are newbies who don't want to play with me. Which maps do you like best, by the way?
