Well, then this post is exactly what you’ve been looking for! However, if you want to read about bragging stories of all those Western guys who get laid a hundred times per day, then you came to the wrong place. There are tons of blog posts like that out there. You certainly won’t find that here – and not from a foreign girl like me! Before we start talking about “Dating in Japan” one thing should be crystal clear: Dating Experience is Different for Foreign Women and Men. If you’ve ever been to Japan you might have noticed that there’s a tremendous number of (often not so handsome) foreign guys walking hand-in-hand with Japanese women. And at the same time, there’s only a very tiny number of foreign (read: non-Asian) women with Japanese men next to them. You might ask yourself why is that? Maybe that’s a secret we’ll never quite get, but there are many theories ! A lot of Japanese women want a guy that tells them several times a day how much he loves them. For some reason (maybe through the consumption of too many Hollywood movies) Japanese women think that foreign men are like that! They’re not afraid of showing their feelings in public or telling their girls flat out how they feel about them. Of course, having a foreign boyfriend is also “ cool ” and “ exotic “. Some just use those poor guys as cute little “ accessories “. The extreme version of this is known as “ gaijin hunter ” and some will do everything for the sake of having one of those adorable “half”-kids (half Western, half Japanese) just to toss their foreign guy later on. For foreign women, it’s a completely different story. Japanese men seem to expect certain things from a woman. Things that they fear a foreign woman would not agree to do (e.g. stay-home moms, always pour new alcohol into his empty glass etc.). Maybe they also think that a foreign woman might expect from their man that he’s telling his feelings straight out several times a day, something a shy Japanese man just won’t do. Another problem is that many of the Japanese men seem to be afraid of their English ability and thus fail to approach a foreign woman. Most foreign men on the other hand, have no issues approaching a Japanese woman in English – or even in broken Japanese. These are just a few theories by friends, co-workers and myself. I’m sure you have your own and there’s much more behind all this. Dating in Japan as a Foreign Man: As a result, dating in Japan is usually quite easy for men. At least getting one woman after another into your bed, is really easy, even if you’re quite ugly! For some reason, Japanese women seem to find even ugly foreign guys attractive ….. It might be a bit more difficult if you’re looking for a serious relationship as there are those women I mentioned earlier who either want you as “exotic accessory” or just want your DNA to create a cute “half-child”. All in all, it is comparably easy for a Western foreign man to find a Japanese woman or to have a nice relationship here in Japan. For some guys, it really gets to their heads and they start bragging about it like crazy. They suffer from the so-called superstar syndrome. Dating in Japan as a Foreign Woman: For (Western) foreign women in Japan it’s a completely different story. Japanese guys are often too shy or even scared and the majority of Western men is only interested in Japanese / Asian women. As a result it is extremely tough to find a date as a foreign woman here in Japan. It is by far not impossible and I know quite a few girls who don’t only have a Japanese boyfriend, but are also married to a Japanese guy, but it is still the BIG exception! Some of us will go through a hard time here in Japan. You’ll start to feel completely unattractive and ignored at times. Of course, you get a lot of attention and there’s all this staring, but it’s not because anybody is flirting with you … or at least you don’t know the difference anymore. It might be a different story in bigger cities such as Tokyo and Osaka with a more international community, but in smaller cities and in the countryside with more traditional ideals it can be very difficult for foreign women. Differences in Relationships: I personally know a few couples where either the man or the woman is foreign and I noticed quite a lot of differences in the kind of relationship they have. Please note that the following is based on my personal experience and that not everybody out there is like that. Foreign Man + Japanese Woman: In relationships where the man is foreign, I noticed that they mostly speak his native language . Although they live in Japan and sometimes even have children together who also speak Japanese, the foreign guys don’t / can’t speak Japanese. I also experienced that they’re unable to do anything on their own. Just one example is a co-worker of mine. When I asked him how he obtained his cellphone or credit card, he said his wife did everything for him. Consequently, a lot of foreign men in Japan don’t see the need to study Japanese, because their wives will take care of all the important things. One big problem seems to be the fact that in Japan the man earns the money , but the woman takes care of it ! The man only gets a small allowance. He actually needs to ask his wife for permission if he wants to spend any of his own hard-earned money! Foreign guys often seem to struggle with this system. Because of all that I’ve seen couples who got divorced, even when there were kids involved. I noticed that those kinds of relationships seem to work out better if they live in his home country and not in Japan. Foreign Woman + Japanese Man: For the opposite constellation, you’ll see that in most(!) cases the woman speaks Japanese . She has studied Japanese properly or puts in a lot of effort to improve her Japanese ability even if the Japanese man can speak her native tongue. They know how to survive in Japan even without the help of their Japanese partner who is at work most of the time anyway. The man seems to accept that she wants to keep working even after marriage . Most of the time those kinds of Japanese men who get into a relationship with a foreign woman are more open-minded and have some experience with foreign culture because they’ve lived or studied abroad for a while. And even those who haven’t, seem to accept that there are cultural differences. So, they don’t expect the same they would from a Japanese woman.

Man Seeking Woman Season 1 Episode 2 Review: “Traib” After a mere two episodes, Man Seeking Woman is already my favorite new show of 2015. It immediately reminded me of HBO’s Hello Ladies with its cringe-worthy moments focused around a guy rediscovering his footing in the sea of dating with hopes of finding love, however, Man Seeking Woman sets itself apart from Hello Ladies by being more realistic and relatable for viewers. In the HBO show, Stuart is a well-off entitled jerk sucked into the upper class California culture that feels he is owed attention and a relationship, whereas Man Seeking Woman’s Josh is a humble, average guy lost after being dumped by the only girlfriend he’s ever known.

Stuart isn’t wrong in feeling the way he does, and Hello Ladies is fantastic for its ability to put a Larry David-esque Curb Your Enthusiasm type character unafraid to speak the blunt truth about ituations that feel straight out of The Inbetweeners, but in the end, it’s a lot nicer, and easier, to root for Josh to succeed in these hilariously surreal scenes. The second episode, titled “Traib,” picks up right where the first left off. Josh successfully secured the phone number of a random girl on the train, giving him hope and confidence. His best friend Mike is over giving him all the necessary pump-up talk required but questions Josh’s constant laims that he is over his ex, Maggie, already. At this point, the episode’s first bizarre sequence begins, as Maggie’s leftover belongings in Josh’s apartment come alive to display that he is not over her. The entire scene was great, from the horror movie feel with the razor, bra, and other items coming to life to Mike bringing in a (foreign speaking) exorcist to rid Josh’s apartment of its demons. The plan is going well until Josh refuses to give up Mr. Heart, a eerie heart-shaped doll with arms and legs that Maggie won him at a carnival, but when the doll comes to life with razor sharp teeth and latches onto his face similarly to a face-hugger from Alien , Josh thinks twice and burns everything in his life that is connected to Maggie. While the first half of “Traib” was good, the episode’s second half was really where I thought things picked up. Josh has begun focusing on texting Laura, the girl he met on the train, to set up a first date and hopefully sleep with her complete the process of getting over Maggie. Josh has one idea of how to text her that includes awkward, cheap, and unfunny jokes, while Mike insists he should send her a nude picture of himself and be straightforward about what he wants. After Josh also consults his sister, Liz on the matter, the second surreal situation begins, and we are thrown into the war room, literally. Josh, Liz, and Mike are all sitting around a table with dressed military men and a background of computers and screens all waging their ideas of how Josh should format his text. Mike eventually delivers an extremely funny and passionate speech supporting his initial idea to send a nude picture despite admitting it’s probably a terrible idea. Josh finally sends a normal text that is direct and not weird. The military men freak out when he doesn’t get an instant response, the general starts slamming scotch and yelling for Josh to call the date off with another text simply saying “JK.” After much panic from everyone, Laura responds, and Josh has secured his date. The date is very painful to watch, as Josh is completely distracted by the meal itself and focused on getting this girl back to his apartment, but this strategy leads to his ultimate downfall. The two of them can’t find anything to talk about, and Josh begins to ramble off multiple romantic comedy titles, eventually reaching a point where Laura hasn’t seen or heard of the movies he’s bringing up.

Based on a collection of short stories by creator Simon Rich, Man Seeking Woman is unlike anything you’ve ever seen on TV before.

With the narrative freedom of a cartoon and the production values of a live-action film, it’s an absurd half-hour comedy about the high stakes of twentysomething singledom as experienced through one man’s perspective. Before you fall down this bunny hole of modern mating madness, here’s what you need to know about Man Seeking Woman , premiering on FXX this Wednesday. It’s like nothing you’ve seen on TV before. Baruchel plays Josh Greenberg, who tackles the single life with the help of his best friend Mike Bunt (Eric Andre) after being dumped by his longtime girlfriend Maggie (Maya Erskine). Finding love, however, is not as easy as your typical 90-minute rom-com would have you believe. For Josh, returning to the dating scene means not only surviving a blind date with an actual troll , but also enduring the humiliation of learning that his ex-girlfriend is dating Adolf Hitler. Not a guy like Hitler, but the actual 126-year-old Adolf Hitler who’s been hiding in Argentina since faking his own death all those years ago. (Guest star alert: Bill Hader plays Führer). Such are the harsh realities of modern dating — and you can be sure they’ll never run out of material. “I have a hell of a time describing it, which is part of what makes it exciting,” Baruchel told Rotten Tomatoes. “There’s no sort of frame of reference. It’s the one TV show you can say is like no other TV show, so the closest I’ve come to describing it is that it’s like a cartoon come to life. That’s the best I can do.” It’s based on a collection of surreal short stories by Simon Rich. The Last Girlfriend on Earth , a collection of short stories by Simon Rich (some of which were previously published in the New Yorker), is the inspiration for Man Seeking Woman . For those unfamiliar with Rich, he has accomplished more professionally by age 30 than most writers can hope to achieve in their lifetimes. After heading The Harvard Lampoon in college, Rich joined Saturday Night Live as one of the youngest writers in the show’s history. In the meantime, he published three story collections and two novels — all before creating his own show for FXX, executive produced by Lorne Michaels. “He’s a very brilliant comic writer,” said writer Ian Maxtone-Graham, known best for his 17 years on The Simpsons . “One of the great short, funny piece-writers in history. I think he’s up there with Ian Frazier and Jack Handey and S. J. Perelman and I was a fan of his for so many years. I think literally since he was 21, I was a fan of this writing.” There’s an eclectic group of talent behind the scenes. In addition to Rich, Man Seeking Woman has an interesting group of writers, including Simpsons vet Maxtone-Graham, The Office ‘s Robert Padnick, New York playwright Sofia Alvarez, and Onion writer Dan Mirk. In the director’s chair, Man Seeking Woman alternates between Benjamin Berman ( Comedy Bang! Bang! , Tim and Eric Awesome Show ) and Tim Kirkby ( Veep , Brooklyn Nine-Nine ), and directing half the episodes is Jonathan Krisel ( Saturday Night Live , Portlandia ). “I knew [Krisel] at SNL ,” Rich said. “We didn’t really work much together — we barely overlapped on that show — but I’ve been a fan of his for years, I’m a big Portlandia fan. When I was looking for a director, he was the very first person that I thought of because I’ve loved his work from afar. He?s great at playing absurd situations with naturalism. From Monty Python to The Simpsons to Portlandia , that’s my favorite type of comedy. What you see is really happening. Playing absurdity with sincerity is exactly what this show is going for. When a character sees his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend as Adolph Hitler, you can understand the inclination to dismiss what’s happening as neurotic fantasy, but writer Dan Mirk said that what you see is the truth. “The way that we’re playing it is that it’s all real,” Mirk explained. “It’s not just like he’s dreaming and that’s what we’re seeing. In the reality of this show, these things are happening. So his ex-girlfriend really is dating Hitler and he really does go on a date with a troll and she really does bite him and he has blood coming out of him… That was just a creative choice that we made.” “There are a lot of strange elements in it,” Rich said. “There’s time travel, there’s aliens, there’s trolls, there’s a Japanese Penis Monster (his name is Tanaka), there are multiple decapitations — so it’s a very unusual show. But, as its core, it’s very simple. It’s just about a guy looking for love. It’s my hope to tell very simple, basic stories, but in a brand new way.” To that point, the actors play the stories as straight as possible. Maya Erskine told Rotten Tomatoes, “Everything’s played for the truth so no mugging.” For Baruchel, though the situations are insane, the emotions are very relatable. “I haven’t been electrocuted or covered in semen in real life, but I’ve certainly been through the minefield that is dating in your twenties. We always want to make sure that the audience has something to connect to.” It has more creative freedom than other TV shows. Rich, whose stories know no bounds, finds that writing for television has its advantages. “If you want to explode the pyramids [in prose], you can just say that the pyramids exploded and you’ve pretty much just done it,” Rich said.

Between 1907 and 1917, in Windsor, Connecticut, nursing home proprietor Amy Archer-Gilligan purchased life insurance policies on her elderly residents before poisoning them with arsenic. In Cordele, Georgia, greed led Janie Lou Gibbs, a church going mother and grandmother who once ran a day-care center, to poison her three sons, a grandson, and her husband in the 1960s for the sole purpose of collecting life insurance. And during the 1880s in Liverpool, England, sisters Catherine Flannigan & Margaret Higgins worked together to poison their own family members in an attempt to claim insurance payouts.
